Dr. Tammy Burnette Society

Donors to the Literacy Council of Tyler contributing a gift of $1,000 or more annually will become members of the Dr. Tammy Burnette Society.

Dr. Tammy Burnette was the embodiment of LCOT’s mission. Her transformation sparked by education is inspiring and proof of the importance and value of adult educational opportunities.

As a single mom of four with a 9th-grade education, Tammy worked hard to support her family. Going back to school was not in her plans until she realized only through education could she provide a better, safer, and healthier life for her family. Tammy enrolled at the Literacy Council of Tyler and completed her GED.

With her confidence growing, Tammy enrolled at Tyler Junior College and obtained an Associate’s Degree. Now a determined student, Tammy enrolled at UT Tyler to get her Bachelor’s, Master’s…and Doctorate Degrees.

Tammy was a professor back where her college experience began - TJC. The one-time single mother of four with a 9th-grade education was now known by Dr. Tammy Burnette.

“Doors of possibilities open with education,” says Dr. Burnette. “I don’t know where my children or I would be if it weren’t for the Literacy Council.”

Tammy sadly passed away in September of 2022. Her legacy lives on through this circle of giving, and within the adult students just like her who are supported through LCOT’s programs.
