Sissi's Story

After some gang involvement and difficult times, Sissi left school after the eighth grade. She married at fifteen and had her first child at sixteen. Another followed soon.

Sissi realized that if she wanted her children to look up to her and to be able to encourage them in their schoolwork, she needed to get an education.

With encouragement from her husband, Sissi enrolled at the Literacy Council of Tyler.

With determination and the help of the staff and volunteers, she completed her GED. She now plans to attend TJC. Sissi says, " I am proud of myself for really doing something for me."

Maria's Story

When Maria first came to the United States she felt sad and alone because she did not speak English…even though she had a family. The situation grew worse when her son entered kindergarten and she was not able to communicate with his teachers. She knew she must learn English so she could better care for her children in her new country.

Maria came to the Literacy Council of Tyler to learn English. Then she went on to receive her GED and has become a United States citizen. Maria is proud to be a role model for her children.
